The 2013 Slackline World Champion brings his 360-degree talent to the Frank Erwin Center. Red Bull athlete Alex Mason, one of America's top talents in the growing sport of slacklining, is the featured halftime performer at the Texas Men's Basketball vs. Texas Tech game on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
"I describe slacklining as a two-inch-wide trampoline four feet off the ground," Mason said. "It's a cross between gymnastics and tight rope."
A veritable slackline prodigy, Mason grew up in California's Bay Area and discovered slacklining at age 13 at his neighborhood climbing gym. He landed his first front flip later that year. He started competing in 2011, at age 14, and in 2012, he landed on the podium at every contest he entered, including National Championships, World Championships, and multiple World Cups. In 2013, Mason won the Slackline World Championships in Vail, Colorado, at age 16.
He is also the originator of the "Mason Flip," which is described as a front flip 360 on a slackline.
