AUSTIN, Texas – No. 8 Texas (3-0) won two of three matches to seal the doubles point before putting away three singles wins in a 4-0 victory over SMU (1-1) Sunday afternoon.
The University of Texas opened its new Texas Tennis Center to the public with a grand opening ceremony on Sunday, but wet weather forced the match's relocation to Weller Indoor Tennis Center at UT Golf Club. The Longhorns got off to a nice start nonetheless and took the doubles point from the Mustangs.
UT's 23rd-ranked tandem of sophomore Yuya Ito and junior Harrison Scott overpowered SMU's Charles Nettlefold and Roberto Rosales by a 6-1 count at second doubles. UT nailed down the doubles point at third doubles where junior Colin Markes teamed with senior John Mee to post a 6-3 win over Gardiner Perotti and Eladio Fabregas. The remaining match was suspended.
UT's Ortiz pushed the Longhorns' lead to 2-0 behind his 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Smith at fifth singles. A moment thereafter, Ito extended the Texas lead to 3-0 with his 6-3, 6-0 victory over Nettlefold at third singles.
Markes clinched the Longhorns' 4-0 team victory by way of his 6-3, 6-3 win over Rosales at sixth singles. The remaining matches were suspended.
Texas resumes play next weekend when it hosts Notre Dame, Tennessee and Minnesota for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns meet the Fighting Irish on Saturday (Jan. 27) at 1 p.m.
