Longhorns lock up a trip to next month’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 12 Texas (4-0) dropped the doubles point but posted four singles wins and rallied for a 4-3 victory at No. 11 California (1-1) Saturday at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event. The win gives Texas one of 15 automatic bids into the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month at The University of Wisconsin.
The Golden Bears won two of three doubles contests to win the doubles point, but Texas evened the match at one behind freshman Fernanda Labrana's 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexis Nelson at fifth singles. Freshman Marta Perez-Mur gave Texas a 2-1 lead by way of a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cal's Jasie Dunk at sixth singles.
Cal evened the match at two with a straight-sets win at fourth singles before Texas sophomore Bianca Turati put the Horns back on top with her convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over the 27th-ranked Anna Bright at first singles.
Cal's Olivia Hauger leveled the team score at three with her 6-3, 6-4 win over UT sophomore Petra Granic at third singles. Sophomore Anna Turati provided the clincher for Texas by breaking Cal's Julia Rosenqvist in the final service game and winning 7-5, 6-4 at second singles.
Texas visits Illinois (Feb. 2) and Northwestern (Feb. 4) next week before heading off to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
Today was an excellent step in the maturation of a very young team. The victory allows us entry into the National Indoors where we will get experience against the top teams in the country. In this respect today was good for the Horns. In so far as the tennis goes, we definitely didn't play our best tennis. We will need to improve and perform better if we are to be a legitimate force. That said the ladies made up for their weaknesses as well as Cal's considerable skill by fighting and being tough. All in all, it was a great weekend for Texas.
