Junior Kerwin Roach II led Texas with 20 points and four assists, while freshman Mohamed Bamba set the school season record for most blocks.
LUBBOCK, Texas –– Texas Men's Basketball fell at No. 10/10 Texas Tech in an overtime thriller, 73-71, on Wednesday night after fighting back from a double-digit second-half deficit. Junior guard Kerwin Roach II paced the Longhorns with 20 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba added seven blocks to break the UT single-single block record. He posted 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and 10 boards for his 11th double-double of the season and sixth in nine Big 12 contests. Freshman guard Matt Coleman registered 12 points and three assists, while junior guard Eric Davis Jr. added 11 points and a career-high four steals to go along with a season-high five rebounds.
The Texas defense held Texas Tech to just 5-of-17 (29%) shooting from beyond the arc and forced 15 Red Raider turnovers. UT finished 24-of-65 from the field and knocked down 10 three-pointers.
Coleman and Roach II connected from deep in the opening four minutes to give the Longhorns an early 8-4 lead. Texas Tech used a 6-0 spurt to pull ahead by four (16-12) for its first lead of the contest at the 11:42 mark, but UT responded quickly with four straight to even the score at 16-16.
Texas was held without a field goal for a 2:54 stretch as the Red Raiders opened up a 22-17 advantage with eight minutes to play in the opening half. Roach knocked down his second 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 28-26 for the Longhorns at the 3:40 mark. UT couldn't find a basket over the final 3:39, and Texas headed to the break trailing by seven (36-29).
Roach II paced the Longhorns in the opening 20 minutes with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. Junior forward Dylan Osetkowski added five points and five rebounds in 19 minutes.
Texas surrendered the first five points out of the locker room as Tech built a 41-29 lead with 17:52 to play in regulation. Coleman and freshman forward Jericho Sims connected from short range to trim the deficit to seven, but the Red Raiders answered with 8-2 spurt to extend the Tech lead back to double-digits (51-38) with 13:07 remaining.
Five straight points from Bamba spurred an 8-1 Longhorn run over a two-minute stretch to bring the Longhorns back within six (52-46) at the 9:29 mark. Texas tied the score at 55-55 after holding the Red Raiders scoreless for a 3:10 period following a jumper from Coleman at the 5:55 mark. A Jase Febres dunk with 4:12 remaining reclaimed the lead (59-57) for the Longhorns for the first time since the 12:41 mark in the first half.
A Bamba dunk and Roach free throw extended the Texas advantage to five (64-59) at the 1:25 mark. Tech was fouled on a three-point attempt with 49 seconds remaining and converted all three shots to make it a one-point (64-63) game. The Red Raiders connected on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with three seconds left to send the contest into overtime.
Texas held Texas Tech without a field goal in the closing 4:40 and outscored the Red Raiders by a 26-13 margin over the final 12 minutes after trailing by as many 13 (51-38) with 13:07 left in the second half.
Tech opened a five-point (70-65) lead with 2:20 to play in overtime, but Roach answered with two 3-pointers to bring the Longhorns even (71-71) with 13 seconds to play. Keenan Evans hit a jumper at the buzzer to win the game for the Red Raiders. Evans led Texas Tech with 38 points, including an 18-of-20 mark from the free throw line.
The Longhorns return to the Frank Erwin Center to host No. 12/15 Oklahoma on Saturday, Feb. 3. Tip is set for 5:15 p.m. Central, and the game willl be televised nationally by ESPN.
Texas and the Erwin Center will also host ESPN's College Gameday Covered by State Farm. Doors open at the Erwin Center at 8:30 a.m., and admission is free for the one-hour morning broadcast (10-11 a.m. Central) which originates from the arena floor.
