Sophomore Fernanda Labraña and senior Katie Poluta post win in tiebreaker against Kansas pair in Sunday’s final.
WACO, Texas — University of Texas sophomore Fernanda Labraña and senior Katie Poluta earned a 7-6 (7-2) win against Maria Toran Ribes and Malkia Ngounoue of Kansas on Sunday afternoon to win the doubles title at the H-E-B Invitational. Labraña and Poluta completed a perfect 4-0 mark over the three-day tournament en route to the doubles championship.
Due to inclement weather, the doubles final was played at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.
Labraña came up just short in her bid to capture both the singles and doubles titles at the H-E-B Invitational. In Sunday morning's singles final that started outside at the Hurd Tennis Center, Labraña won the first set 6-1 against Maria Genovese of Tyler Junior College and held a 5-4 lead in the second set.
With the game score tied at 40-40, lightning forced a delay and weather eventually forced the match indoors. Once inside, Genovese rallied to take the second set in a tiebreak (7-2 in the breaker) and closed out the match with a 6-1 win in the third set.
