The Longhorns came up just short in a tiebreaker in doubles to prevent an opportunity at the end of singles in their final regular season match.
Norman, Okla. – No. 6 Texas Women's Tennis fell to No. 7 Oklahoma, 4-2, on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The match closed the regular season for the Longhorns, who finished it 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the SEC and will be the 5 seed at next week's SEC Championship back in Norman.
Texas came up just short in a tiebreaker in the deciding doubles match at No. 1 after having been first off the court with a top-15 win at No. 2 before Oklahoma evened it at No. 3. The teams then alternated the first four singles wins with the Sooners taking No. 3 for a 2-0 lead, but the Longhorns answered with a win by freshman Elizabeth Ionescu at No. 4. Oklahoma then won at No. 6, and freshman No. 12 Anastasia Abbagnato registered a top-10 victory at No. 1 to get back within 3-2. However, the clinch came at No. 2 for Oklahoma, leaving the final match at No. 6 unfinished where it was on serve in the third set.
During doubles, Texas captured that top-15 victory as sophomore Salma Drugdova and freshman Christasha McNeil downed No. 15 Evialina Laskevich and Edda Mamedova, 6-3, at No. 2. Oklahoma answered as sophomore Eszter Meri and freshman Mathilde Ngijol-Carré fell to Julia Garcia Ruiz and Salakthip Ounmuang, 6-4, at No. 3. That left to it to No. 1 where Abbagnato and Ionescu had been up a break against the nation's top-ranked doubles team of Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum, but the match was forced to a tiebreaker where the Sooners clinched by a narrow 7-5 margin.
The teams each put singles points up on the board before rain came and moved the rest of the contest inside. Prior to that, McNeil was defeated by No. 64 Garcia Ruiz, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Ionescu then gave Texas its first point with a 6-4, 6-1 over Chole Noel at No. 4.
After the move inside, freshman Kate Mansfield was downed by Nahum, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6, but a short time later, Abbagnato topped No. 10 Laskevich, 6-2, 7-6 (4), at No. 1. The same tiebreaker score came in the first set of No. 50 Meri's match, but No. 54 Mamedova emerged from it as part of 7-6 (4), 6-4 decision that clinched the match. That left No. 5 unfinished where Ngijol-Carré came through with a late break and tiebreaker win to force a third set against Ounmuang and was down just a game but on serve, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 1-2, when play stopped.
