Roach II hits 3-pointer to force OT; Ramey converts last-minute floater to lift Longhorns to victory at the Armed Forces Classic.
EL PASO, Texas — Senior guard Kerwin Roach II knocked down a three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, and freshman guard Courtney Ramey hit the game-winning floater with 47 seconds left in overtime to lift Texas (2-0) to a 73-71 victory over Arkansas (0-1) in the Armed Forces Classic. The game was played in Soto Gym at Fort Bliss in front of approximately 1,400 service men and women and their families.
Roach recorded a team-high 18 points and tied his career high with 11 rebounds while playing 39 minutes. This marked his second career double-double and first since Jan. 30, 2016 during his freshman season. Senior Dylan Osetkowski added a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds (one shy of his career high) in 39 minutes.
Sophomore forward Jericho Sims (14 points), junior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long (10 points) and Ramey (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring for the Longhorns. Daniel Gafford paced Arkansas with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Razorbacks jumped out to a 13-5 lead at the 15:02 mark following a free throw from Jalen Harris. Texas responded with a 22-2 run over the next five minutes to build a 12-point cushion (27-15) at the 8:59 mark. UT held a 36-26 advantage after an Osetkowski layup with 1:20 left, before Arkansas scored the final two baskets of the half to climb within 36-30 at the break.
Texas converted just 19.2-percent (5-26) from the floor but did knock down 14-of-20 free throws in the second half. Trailing 63-60 with 9 seconds remaining in regulation after Gafford converted 1-of-2 free throws, the Longhorns put the ball in Roach's hands and the senior came through with a three-pointer from the right wing with 1.1 seconds left. Arkansas' Harris missed a desperation shot at the buzzer, and the game went into overtime.
In the extra period, Harris knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:12 remaining to give the Razorbacks a 71-70 lead. On the ensuing possession, Ramey turned the corner and converted a floater with 47 seconds left to put Texas in front 72-71. After a defensive stop, Mitrou-Long hit 1-of-2 free throws, and Arkansas missed two scoring chances in the final 7 seconds to seal the UT victory.
