Jase Febres and Elijah Mitrou-Long each score team-high 16 points to pace five Longhorns in double-figure scoring.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Elijah Mitrou-Long and sophomore guard Jase Febres each registered a team-high 16 points to lead The University of Texas Men's Basketball team (7-3) to a 98-60 win against Grand Canyon (5-5) on Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center. The Longhorns had five players reach double figures in scoring and set team season highs in points, field goals made (37), three-point field goals made (16), field goal percentage (58.7), three-point field goal percentage (53.3) and assists (22) en route to the 38-point victory.
Mitrou-Long, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Saturday, set his UT career high in scoring while converting 6-of-8 field goals, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range, and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists without a turnover and 2 steals in 28 minutes. Febres also tallied a season high in points and was just two shy of his career high (18 at Baylor on Jan. 6, 2018) while hitting 4-of-10 three-pointers and adding 5 rebounds.
Freshman guard Courtney Ramey dished out a career-high 8 assists to go along with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Senior guard Kerwin Roach II contributed 15 points and 5 assists, and senior forward Dylan Osetkowski added 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Texas used an early 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Ramey, to jump out to an 11-3 lead at the 16:19 mark. The Longhorns, which never trailed in the contest, knocked down back-to-back threes from sophomore guard Matt Coleman III and Febres to extend their cushion to 26-11 with 11:36 left.
A layup by Ramey with three seconds remaining in the half gave the Longhorns a 26-point cushion (56-30) at the break. Texas connected on 69-percent of its field goals (22-32), including a 59-percent mark from three-point range (10-17), and had 15 assists against just 4 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
The Lopes were unable to cut the deficit to fewer than 26 points after the 10-minute mark of the second half.
