Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba paced the Longhorns with 23 points.
FORT WORTH, Texas – Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba posted a team-high 23 points, but Texas Men's Basketball fell to TCU on Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth, 87-71.
Bamba matched a season high with nine field goals on 9-of-16 shooting and brought down five rebounds in his fourth game scoring 20 or more points this season. Junior guard Eric Davis Jr. contributed 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 3-of-3 mark from three-point range, adding three assists and two boards in 31 minutes.
UT dished out 18 assists and was 27-of-52 (52%) from the field, knocking down 10 3-pointers. The Longhorn bench held a 25-8 scoring margin over TCU.
Texas trailed 13-8 at the under-16 media timeout despite starting 4-of-6 from the field in the opening four minutes. A deep three from freshman Jase Febres at the 12:37 mark brought the Longhorns within five (18-13).
Freshman Matt Coleman gathered an offensive rebound and laid it in to cut the deficit to just 24-21, but the Horned Frogs answered with a quick five points to build an eight-point (29-21) advantage with 7:59 to play in the opening half. TCU continued to extend the lead (39-29) after knocking down four straight field goals, forcing a Texas timeout with 3:41 remaining. The Longhorns were held without a field goal over the last 3:02, and UT headed to the break trailing 48-37.
Bamba led Texas in the first half with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Febres added six points. Texas shot 14-of-27 (52%) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including a 42 percent clip (5-of-12) from beyond the arc.
TCU recorded the first five points after halftime to open up a 16-point (53-37) lead with 18:48 remaining. Texas pulled within 59-49 at the 13:27 mark after a 9-2 run, fueled by back-to-back buckets from Bamba. Davis Jr. recorded seven straight points over a 1:42 stretch, as the Longhorns climbed to within 68-60 with 10 minutes remaining.
Texas trailed 75-66 after a Coleman three, but TCU connected from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions to regain a double-digit (81-66) advantage with 5:54 to play in regulation. Texas converted on just 2-of-9 field goals to end the contest as the Longhorns fell, 87-71.
Texas will be back at the Erwin Center on Monday, Feb. 12 to face the Baylor Bears. Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central, and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN for Big Monday.
