Longhorns begin three-match home stand against Utah State on Feb. 9.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 2 Ohio State (6-0) won the doubles point and added three singles wins in a 4-0 victory over No. 13 Texas (4-2) Saturday afternoon at OSU's Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State opened the match with wins at the third and first doubles positions, respectively, to earn the doubles point. Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert posted a 6-0 win over UT's Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott at third doubles.
At first doubles, OSU's Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce closed out a 6-4 win over UT's Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer when the Buckeyes registered a break in the Horns' final service game. The remaining match was suspended in a tiebreaker pitting UT's Christian Sigsgaard and Adrian Ortiz against OSU's J.J. Wolf and John McNally.
The Buckeyes assumed a 2-0 lead behind the fifth-ranked Torpegaard's 6-1, 6-3 win over UT's 27th-ranked Scott at first singles. OSU took a 3-0 lead moments later when Wolf knocked off Texas' Telles at second singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Ohio State clinched its 4-0 win at fifth singles when the 102nd-ranked Joyce defeated UT's 98th-ranked Banzer, 6-3, 6-3. UT's Sigsgaard and Ito won the opening sets of their matches, but their contests, in addition to the match at court six, were abandoned once Ohio State scored the match-clinching point.
Texas opens a three-match home stand on Friday, Feb. 9. The Longhorns host Utah State at Texas Tennis Center (5:30 p.m. CT) before taking on Arkansas indoors next Sunday (Feb. 11) at Weller Tennis Center. Later on, Texas welcomes Georgia Tech to Texas Tennis Center on Feb. 25.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
Ohio State was too good for us today. I saw some positives, but overall it was a disappointing day. Ohio State is very good, but we need to compete better moving forward to be competitive with the best teams. We have a lot of work to do.
