AUSTIN, Texas – Senior guards Ariel Atkins and Brooke McCarty finished with 16 points apiece, leading No. 8 Texas (18-4, 9-2) to a 92-65 defeat of No. 22 TCU (16-6, 7-4), at the Frank Erwin Center on Saturday afternoon.
Atkins posted a 3-for-3 clip on three-point shots, shooting 5-from-9 attempts while adding three free-throws and six rebounds.
McCarty finished 5-for-11 shooting and was an errorless 4-of-4 from the line.
Junior forward Jatarie White and sophomore forward Joyner Holmes also finished in double-digit points, with 12 and 10 points respectively, while Holmes added seven rebounds.
Texas were 31-for-65 in shooting field goals, 10-for-19 in three-point shots, and 20-for-25 from the free-throw line.
Senior forward Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau led Texas defensively with a career-high six blocks, with the Longhorns recording a season-high 11 blocks and outrebounding the Horned Frogs, 44-28.
Atkins opened the scoring, sinking a jump shot to put Texas ahead 2-0 after a minute of play, and was next up on the scoreboard for Texas with a three-point shot after two TCU free-throws. Atkins gave Texas an early 5-2 lead and began a 25-2 run for a 23-point margin at 27-4 by the end of the first quarter.
After holding TCU to 1-for-15 in shooting and outrebounding the Horned Frogs 17-to-7 in the first quarter, the Longhorns' lead only fell below 20 points once, with 4:11 left in the half on a TCU free-throw. White replied with a layup, making it 40-19, before Texas then reached the 50-point mark on a Holmes jump shot with 21 seconds left. The Longhorns went into the break at 50-24.
Texas continued to control the pace of the contest in the second half, playing a lineup of freshmen and non-starters for the majority of the final period to secure an all-time 20th win over the Horned Frogs in Austin.
After reaching a match-high 36 point lead midway through the third quarter with a McCarty three-point shot, the Longhorns closed out the match with a 92-65 final score.
Next up, Texas will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., on Monday, Feb. 5, to play the No. 21 West Virginia Mountaineers. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on FS1. The game will also be broadcast on 105.3 FM in Austin or at texassports.com/audio.
