Longhorns win the doubles point and post three three-set singles victories.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – No. 12 Texas (11-4, 2-0 Big 12) captured the doubles point and rallied from one-set deficits across the board in singles to finish off a 4-0 victory at No. 40 Kansas State (10-4, 1-1 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium.
Texas won doubles contests at the second and third positions to lock up the doubles point. Freshman Marta Perez-Mur and sophomore Bianca Turati led off with a 6-3 victory over Maria Linares and Rosanna Maffei at second doubles.
UT closed the doubles session with a 6-1 win from junior Katie Poluta and sophomore Anna Turati over Anna Turco and Ines Mesquita at third doubles. The remaining contest at first doubles was suspended.
Texas put away three hard-fought singles victories but not before K-State won all six opening sets. UT's 64th-ranked sophomore Petra Granic rallied from one set down to post a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Carolina Costamagna at third singles for a 2-0 Longhorns lead.
UT freshman Bojana Markovic trailed by a set and was in a substantial hole in the second set to K-State's Maffei before rallying all the way back to victory. Markovic forced a second-set tiebreaker where she prevailed, 7-6 (3). Markovic overpowered Maffei the rest of the way and closed out the final set, 6-2 to deliver Texas a 3-0 lead.
Perez-Mur clinched the Longhorns' team victory for the second time in as many matches. She dropped the first set to Turco at fifth singles before hanging on for a 6-4 second-set win. Perez-Mur held off Turco 6-3 in the final set to nail down the Longhorns' 4-0 match victory. Texas led or was tied in the remaining three singles matches when they were suspended once the overall match outcome had been decided.
Texas returns home next weekend to host Oklahoma (March 23) and No. 19 Oklahoma State (March 25).
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
In as much as our start to the singles was disappointing, one would have to objectively credit Kansas State with some superb tennis. After losing all six first sets it looked a little bleak for a while, but this is a prideful and tough group of young ladies. They were able to pick themselves up and turn the match around. In this respect, it was a good day. Clearly, we need to keep improving and start playing better tennis.
