The No. 7 University of Texas women's basketball team opens play in the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday when it faces the winner between seventh-seeded Iowa State and 10th-seeded Kansas in the quarterfinal round. Tip-off in Chesapeake Energy Arena is slated for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net. The Longhorns are the No. 2 seed in this year's Big 12 Championship.
Texas (24-5, 15-3 Big 12 Conference) holds an all-time record of 24-20 in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. The Longhorns have earned four consecutive Big 12 quarterfinal victories and have played in the championship final in two of the last three years.
"I thought we played really good [against Oklahoma]," Texas head coach Karen Aston said. "I'm hoping that we'll carry that over into the tournament. I definitely think from last year's experiences, we saw a team get hot and I don't think we'll take anything for granted this year. We'll try to live by what we've been doing, which is one game at a time."
The Longhorns are led by a pair of first-team All-Big 12 Conference performers in senior guards Ariel Atkins and Brooke McCarty. Atkins averages a squad-best 14.8 points per game on 53.8 percent shooting from the field with 5.6 rebounds per game and a team-high 2.7 steals per game. She ranks 32nd nationally in steals per game and 41st nationally in field-goal percentage. Atkins ranks in the top-15 of eight different Big 12 Conference statistical categories.
McCarty, the Big 12 Conference leader in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.7, averages 14.1 points per game and a squad-best 4.5 assists per game. She has made a team-high 53 three-pointers and leads her squad with a 91.4 percent clip from the free-throw line.
Junior guard Lashann Higgs, a second-team All-Big 12 selection, averages 13.0 points per game, while junior center Jatarie White adds 10.1 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard/forward Joyner Holmes is bringing down a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game.
Texas and Iowa State would meet for the 35th time in the history of the two programs. The Cyclones lead the all-time series between the two teams 18-16, but the Longhorns have won five of the last six meetings.
Texas and Texas Tech would meet for the 101st time in the history of the two programs. The Longhorns hold a 71-29 advantage in the all-time series. Texas has won the past 10 meetings between the two teams in the series. TTU is UT's most frequent opponent historically.
