AUSTIN, Texas - Seven meet records fell on Saturday during the final day of the 2018 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Built By The Home Depot. The elite pole vault competitions highlighted the action, with meet records falling in both events. Four records fell on the track as the excitement concluded in front of a large final-day crowd at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Total Attendance: 45,612 (Friday - 19,058; Saturday - 20,704)
The men's elite pole vault featured six Olympians, with a trio of impressive performers hitting 5.92 (19-5) to break the Texas Relays and Myers Stadium records. Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie entered as the current world record holder. He hit that mark along with Canadian Shawn Barber and high school phenom Armand Duplantis. The mark for Duplantis set a new World Junior record.
Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr was back once again to break the Texas Relays record, this year with a jump of 4.82 (15-10). She had set the previous record last year at Relays with a mark of 4.73m. On the collegiate side, Virginia Tech freshman Lisa Gunnarsson broke the meet record with an impressive jump of 4.60 (15-1), tied for the seventh-best jump in collegiate history.
The relays, as always, produced a lot of exciting action. On the men's side, Houston was victorious in the 4x100 and 4x200, while Texas A&M won both the 4x400 and 4x800. On the women's side, LSU won the 4x100, Baylor won the 4x400 and Texas A&M set a meet record in the 4x800.
The University of Houston men were named 2018 Most Outstanding Team with wins in the 4x100, 4x200, 100 and 200 invitational, among many other strong races and performances throughout. The DeSoto girls were also named Most Outstanding Team with victories in the Girls' Division II 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.
Houston's Elijah Hall, Lafayette High School's Armand Duplantis and Tori Franklin were named 2018 Most Outstanding Performers. Hall set the meet record in the 200 meters invitational and ran on UofH's victorious 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams. Duplantis set a meet record and Junior World record in the pole vault, while Franklin's triple jump not only set a meet record, but was the No. 3 triple jump in American history.
