03.07.2018 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Jordan Windle earns third NCAA bid of the week while Jacob Cornish picks up his second.
MINNEAPOLIS – Texas sophomore Jacob Cornish and UT freshman Jordan Windle posted NCAA Championships qualifying marks in the men's platform diving final Wednesday as the NCAA Zone Diving Meet came to a close at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center.
Cornish and Windle only needed top-12 finishes in the men's platform final to earn bids to compete in the event at the NCAA Championships. They delivered with room to spare. Windle took second place through the preliminary and final rounds with 806.15 points. The two-time World Championships qualifier will compete in all three diving events – one-meter, three-meter and platform – at the national meet.
Cornish, the Big 12 champion and NCAA qualifier on one-meter, placed fourth in the platform final with 715.55 points to cement his second NCAA Championships bid of the meet. Sophomore Reed Merritt fell shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships and placed 11th at 646.35. Merritt needed a top-six finish on platform to qualify for the national meet.
Cornish, Windle and sophomore Grayson Campbell will return to Minneapolis with 15 of their Texas swimming teammates for the NCAA Championships set for March 21-24.
Texas, the three-time defending NCAA champion, is the winningest NCAA Division I men's swimming and diving program with 13 national titles.
