No. 3 Rowing sweeps Big 12 Double Dual
04.07.2018 | Rowing
Longhorns win all five races against West Virginia and two races against host Old Dominion.
NORFOLK, Va. – No. 3 Texas made a clean sweep of its seven races before weather intervened and canceled its final three races Saturday morning in the Big 12 Double Dual on the Lafayette River.
"I'm impressed with how all our crews raced," said fourth-year UT head coach Dave O'Neill. "We've made some big changes the last two weeks, and the group that raced today did a great job. I was particularly impressed with our second eight since they hadn't rowed together too much, but that didn't seem to hold them back. We clearly have more work to do, but we are heading in the right direction."
Saturday's double dual featured four Big 12 rowing schools taking on two league members in a pair of separate double duals across two sessions of racing. The racing format called for the Longhorns to take on West Virginia and regatta host Old Dominion, and Texas raced to open-water wins in each of its races.
The Longhorns' varsity eight raced to victory in the very first race of the day, as it crossed the finish at 2,000 meters in 6 minutes, 46.411 seconds. The same boat defeated Old Dominion in the second session at 6:27.255.
UT's second varsity eight was victorious over West Virginia in 6:52.695 before racing to victory over Old Dominion in the second session at 7:00.998.
The Longhorns' varsity four boat posted an open-water victory over West Virginia in 7:45.372. West Virginia scratched its second varsity four boat from competition. Nonetheless, Texas' second varsity four raced on its own and completed the 2,000 meters in 7:52.100.
UT's third varsity eight also was victorious and navigated the course in 7:01.500.
"Big thanks to the Old Dominion athletic department and head coach Dan Garbutt," O'Neill added. "They put on a terrific event, and I'm really glad this worked out. The racing started pretty early due to the weather, and the first session was terrific. They made the right call to cancel the racing when they did, and I really appreciate everything ODU did to make this work."
