AUSTIN, Texas – No. 11 Texas (19-6) captured the doubles point and finished off three singles wins as the Longhorns blanked No. 34 California 4-0 Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Championships.
Texas advances to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships for a fifth consecutive season. The No. 11 national seed Longhorns will take on sixth-seeded Mississippi State in the round of 16 on Friday, May 18 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. First serve is set for noon ET.
Texas and California (12-10) met for the third time in the last five NCAA Championships. As was the case in the previous two meetings, the Longhorns came away victorious. UT rang up victories at the third and first positions to lock up the doubles point and a 1-0 match lead.
All-America sophomore Yuya Ito joined junior Colin Markes to post a 6-2 win over the Bears' Dominic Barretto and Can Kaya at third doubles. The match at first doubles featured a pair of top-40 teams going head to head.
UT's 39th-ranked tandem of junior Harrison Scott and sophomore Christian Sigsgaard held on for a 6-3 win over the 33th-ranked duo of Billy Griffith and J.T. Nishimura to nail down the doubles point. The remaining match at second doubles was suspended.
Texas junior Rodrigo Banzer was tough as nails in the second round of the NCAA Championships a year ago, and the All-Big 12 standout was true to form on Saturday. Banzer staked the Horns to a 2-0 lead with his 6-4, 6-0 win over Paul Barretto at fifth singles.
Scott and his classmate Markes finished their matches only a moment apart to send the Horns on to the next round. Scott dealt Jack Molloy a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at third singles for a 3-0 Longhorns lead, and Markes wrapped up a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win over Jacob Brumm at sixth singles to polish off Texas' second-round victory. The remaining matches were suspended.
