AUSTIN, Texas – No. 6 national seed Texas (24-4) claimed the doubles point and posted three straight-sets singles wins in a 4-0 victory over No. 30 Texas A&M Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Championships. The Longhorns advance to the third round (round of 16) at the NCAA Championships for the second time in the last three seasons.
Texas heads to the finals site of the NCAA Championships at Wake Forest and will take on No. 11 seed Texas Tech or Illinois in the third round on Thursday, May 17.
Texas sustained a strong challenge from the Aggies in doubles before winning the point for a 1-0 match lead. At second doubles, senior Dani Wagland and freshman Marta Perez-Mur picked up a key service break midway through their match and knocked off A&M's Tatiana Makarova and Macarena, 6-3.
UT sophomore Petra Granic and freshman Bojana Markovic followed suit and put away a 6-3 victory over A&M's Eva Paalma and Domenica Gonzalez at first doubles. The remaining match was suspended.
Granic locked up her 17th straight singles victory and dealt Paalma a 6-3, 6-0 defeat at third singles for a 2-0 Texas lead. Wagland took early control against A&M's Iulia Ivascu at sixth singles and cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory for a 3-0 Longhorns lead.
Perez-Mur punched the Longhorns' ticket to Wake Forest with her 6-3, 6-3 victory over Makarova at fifth singles. The remaining matches were suspended given that Texas had clinched the team victory.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
I am very proud and happy for our young group, and I'm relieved. I'm relieved in the sense that, as the No. 5 team in the country, we had a lot to play for but we also had a lot to lose. So, in that it was a touchy matchup and a big rivalry, that our team rose to the occasion makes an old coach very relieved.
