EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Track & Field showed their strength in the women's hurdles events on Thursday as all three Longhorns in the two hurdle events advanced out of the semifinals and into the final at the NCAA Championships from Historic Hayward Field.
Texas had seven entries in the running semifinals for the women on Thursday and saw XXX advance overall, including Rushelle Burton and Pedrya Seymour in the 100m hurdles and Ariel Jones in the 400m hurdles.
Burton powered her way to victory in her heat of the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.77 seconds. Seymour ran 12.81 to also win her heat and give Texas two of the eight runners in the final on Saturday. The Longhorns will be the only team with multiple entries in the final. Burton finished third last year in the final with a time of 12.65 seconds.
Jones ran her fastest time of the season to finish fourth in her heat of the 400m hurdles in 56.89 seconds. She was just .45 off her personal best. Her time withstood the other two heats to hold onto the top qualifying spot based on time. Jones ranked fifth overall in the semifinals as she will look to improve on her fourth-place finish a year ago.
The Texas women had two seniors in action in field events on Thursday night with Kally Long and Haley Crouser looking to end their careers on the podium.
Long cleared a height of 4.30m (14-1.25) on her third attempt to finish in a tie for ninth place. She was eliminated from the competition attempting to tie her personal best of 4.40m (14-5.25). Had she been able to clear 4.30 on a second attempt she would have moved up to a tie for sixth place based on misses.
Crouser was unable to repeat her top eight finish from a year ago as she came in 18th in the javelin. In her finale in her home state Crouser threw 47.26m (155-1).
Back on the track, the Longhorns were unable to advance their women's 4x100m relay out of the semifinals. The tandem of Burton, Teahna Daniels, Seymour and Zola Golden clocked 43.70 seconds to finish in 11th place. Their time was just .01 off their time from the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
Also running individually for Texas was Daniels in the 100m and Serenity Douglas in the 400m. Douglas crossed the finish line in 52.67 seconds to finish in 15th place overall and Daniels was 17th in her event in 11.34.
Texas closed the night with the 4x400m relay. The Longhorns put together a team of Douglas, Jones, Mariam Abdul-Rashid and Golden and finished in 16th place with a time of 3:37.45.
The women's team will close the NCAA Championships on Saturday when the women's team title will be decided upon the completion of all 21 events. Texas will have five scoring opportunities with Ashtin Zamzow in the heptathlon and Elena Bruckner in the discus joining the trio of hurdlers. The women look to extend their streak of Top 25 finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships dating back to 2011.
Friday's action will see the completion of the men's events with a team champion crowned as well as Day 1 of the women's heptathlon with Ashtin Zamzow competing for Texas. Action starts at 12:30 p.m. Pacific (2:30 Central).
The men will have four more scoring opportunities on Friday with O'Brien Wasome in the triple jump and a trio of runners in finals. Sam Worley takes on the field in the 1,500m looking to give Texas its first top eight finisher since 2008. John Rice will run the 3,000m steeplechase hoping to make the podium for Texas. The Longhorns have not scored in that event since 2009, and John Burt runs the 110m hurdles looking to give Texas its first scorer since 2015.
