Men's Basketball falls 68-62 to No. 8/8 Texas Tech

Kerwin Roach II paced the Longhorns with a team-high 17 points.
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior guard Kerwin Roach II recorded a team-high 17 points, but The University of Texas Men's Basketball team (10-6, 2-2 Big 12) fell 68-62 to No. 8/8 Texas Tech (15-1, 4-0 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Erwin Center. Roach converted 6-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free throw line while adding 5 rebounds and 5 assists in 37 minutes.
Freshman forward Jaxson Hayes tied a career high with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down 5 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jase Febres recorded 12 points, hitting 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Roach accounted for 10 of UT's first 14 points, including a three-pointer that give Texas its first lead of the night (12-11) at the 9:45 mark. A driving layup by Febres with 41 seconds remaining gave the Longhorns a four-point cushion (30-26) at the half.
Texas' defense held the Red Raiders to just 10-of-28 shooting (35.7 percent) in the first half, marking the sixth time UT has held an opponent to under 40 percent shooting in the first half.
Texas Tech quickly recaptured the lead (32-30) at the 18:31 mark, following back-to-back three-pointers by Matt Mooney to start the second half. A pair of threes from Febres and a Hayes alley-oop finish tied the score at 48-48 with 8:09 left.
The Red Raiders answered with a 7-0 run to build a 55-48 cushion with 6:29 left. Brandone Francis knocked down a three-pointer to give the Red Raiders their largest lead of the night (61-51) with 3:36 left.
Texas used a 6-0 spurt to trim the lead to four (61-57) with 1:45 remaining. Texas Tech converted on 7-of-8 from the free throw line over the last 46 seconds to seal the win.
