MANHATTAN, Kan. - Junior point guard Sug Sutton scored a game-high 22 points, but No. 11 Texas fell to Kansas State, 87-69, on Wednesday at Bramlage Coliseum.
The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Texas (14-3, 4-1 Big 12 Conference). Kansas State (11-6, 2-3 Big 12) earned its first win against Texas since Feb. 4, 2015.
Sutton's 22 points were complemented by seven assists. Senior Danni Williams added 18 points.
The Wildcats got out to a fast start, making five of its first seven three-point attempts. A 10-0 run by the Wildcats in the first quarter pushed Kansas State ahead 18-8.
In the second period, Texas remained scoreless for almost four minutes, with defensive lapses plaguing the team's offensive efforts. The Wildcats held a 16-point lead over the Longhorns at 7:20, before Williams stole the ball from K-State's Jasauen Beard. Williams went on an aggressive fast break, driving into the paint and earning a pair of free throws off a Kansas State foul. The Longhorns attempted to chip away at the lead, but the Wildcats held strong, taking a 19-point lead into the locker room. At the end of the first half, Texas shot 34.6 percent from the floor (9-of-26) and tallied 17 rebounds to the Wildcats' 15.
Texas refused to give up, coming out of the locker room on a 7-0 run, closing the gap and bringing the score to 30-42. Kansas State responded with a 7-0 run of its own, extending its lead once more to 19.
In the final period, Texas brought the Wildcats' lead down to 14 at 3:39, but Kansas State quickly recovered, pushing back to a 21-point extension at 30 seconds to go. Despite scoring a game-high 26 points in the period, Texas was unable to overcome the deficit.
