No. 8 Men’s Tennis sweeps doubleheader against UTSA and TAMU-CC

The Longhorns earned a 6-1 win over the Roadrunners and followed with a 4-0 sweep of the Islanders on Wednesday.
Austin – The No. 8 Texas Men's Tennis team swept a doubleheader with a 6-1 win over UTSA and a 4-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday at the Texas Tennis Center. The wins pushed the Longhorns dual match record to 6-0 on the season and they have a combined 31-2 scoring advantage over their opponents.
In the opener against UTSA, the Longhorns and Roadrunners played out all of the doubles and singles matches. Texas took the doubles point as No. 33 junior Christian Sigsgaard and senior Harrison Scott topped Juri Reckow and Joao Ceolin in first doubles, 6-3. Senior Johnny Goodwin and freshman Nevin Arimilli then partnered for their first action of the season in dual match play and clinched the point with a 6-2 win in third doubles over Javier Rodriguez and Javier Gonzalez. The second doubles pair of Chih Chi Huang and Yuya Ito played out their match with for a 6-4 finish over Kei Breitbach and Alan Sanson.
The singles matches began with senior Colin Markes picking up a win following an injury retirement by Javier Gonzalez with Markes having taken the first set, 6-4. No. 18 Ito then topped Ceolin (6-1, 6-1) in second singles. Ito dropped the first game of the first set, but then won six straight and similarly was down 2-1 in the second before finishing with five straight games. No. 4 Sigsgaard clinched the team win in first singles for the Longhorns with his second victory over a ranked opponent in a row by downing No. 66 Breitbach, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Rodrigo Banzer gave Texas its fifth point by claiming a second-set tiebreaker in fourth singles for a 6-2, 7-2 (2) win over Reckow. No. 103 Huang then finished the team match by going the distance in third singles against Javier Rodriguez a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (8) victory. The Roadrunners' lone point on the day came as Sanson topped Goodwin, 7-5, 6-2, in sixth singles.
In the second match versus TAMU-CC, the teams played to clinch. Arimilli and Goodwin once again teamed up and earned the first win in third doubles over Thibault Frumholz and Carlos Pedrosa (6-3). Markes and Telles paired in second doubles after not playing against UTSA and defeated Okkie Kellerman and Kyohei Yamanaka, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point. No. 33 Sigsgaard and Scott went unfinished with a 5-4 lead over William Mottet and Thomas Rodrigues.
Texas did not play Sigsgaard or Ito in singles against the Islanders. Goodwin rebounded and picked up his first singles win of the season in dual match play with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Yamanaka in fifth singles. He took the first 11 games of the match before finally dropping one, but then finished it off to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead. Scott followed just behind in second singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Pedrosa before Banzer clinched the team sweep for the Longhorns with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kellerman in fourth singles. No. 103 Huang was close to a win in third singles when play stopped, leading Rodrigues, 6-4, 5-1. Telles had also earned a set one win in his match at first singles versus Mottet, while Arimilli dropped his first set but was leading 4-3 in the second against Frumholz.
The Longhorns return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against No. 6 North Carolina for their first indoor match of the season at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
