NEW YORK, N.Y. — Junior point guard Matt Coleman III posted a team-high 14 points and 6 assists to lead The University of Texas Men's Basketball team (5-1) to a 62-45 victory against California (4-2) on Friday night at Madison Square Garden. This marked the third-place game at the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
The Texas defense limited California to 45 points on 35.6% FG shooting (16-45), including a 12.5% mark (1-8) from three-point range, and forced 12 turnovers on the night. The Longhorns assisted on 17 of their 26 made field goals and committed a season-low 5 turnovers.
Junior forward Jericho Sims posted 12 points (6-7 FG), a game-high 9 rebounds (4 offensive) and a career-high 3 assists in 30 minutes. Junior guard Jase Febres tallied 12 points while converting 4-of-6 from three-point range, and sophomore guard Courtney Ramey added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Leading 25-21 at the break, the Longhorns converted 45.5% (15-33) from the floor while outscoring the Golden Bears by a 37-24 in the final 20 minutes.
