Newport Beach, Calif. – Texas Men's Tennis swept the four matches it played on day two of the ITA National Fall Championships on Thursday. As on day one, seniors Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard both earned singles wins before later combining for a doubles victory, while freshman Siem Woldeab also added a singles win.
Ito and Sigsgaard both advanced to the round of 16 in the singles main draw with Ito claiming a 6-3, 6-3 win over Riley Smith of USC, and Sigsgaard securing a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Mateo Vereau of BYU.
Ito fell behind 2-0 early in his match, but broke on a deuce point to cut it to 2-1. The players then both held to a 3-2 lead for Smith, but from there, Ito took the last four games and the set. The second set stayed on serve all the way to a 4-3 lead for Ito when he got the first break and then held for a 6-3 win. Ito will next face No. 49 Adrian Boitan of Baylor on Friday at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT.
Sigsgaard also opened down 2-1 to Vereau, but turned it on from there and did not lose another game the rest of the match. He finished with 11 straight wins to secure the 6-2, 6-0 decision. Up next for Sigsgaard will be the 3 seed No. 11 John McNally of Ohio State on Friday at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT.
Woldeab rebounded from his close opening round loss to continue on to the consolation round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 70 Lukas Greif of Florida. Deuce points were in abundance again for Woldeab with a total of six in the first set, five of which he won, including the first two and last two. He secured another on a break to open the second set and then held in the next game for a 2-0 lead. Greif answered with the following two games, but Woldeab took it from there and finished on a 4-0 run. He will square off against Tin Chen of Louisville on Friday at 9 a.m. PT/11 a.m. CT.
As a double pair, Ito and Sigsgaard moved on to the quarterfinals of the main draw with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Mor Bulis and Daniel Cukierman of USC. The first set went without a break all the way until the end. Texas came close while up 3-2 and 0-40, but USC rallied to even it, 3-3. The Longhorns claimed deuce points of their own for leads of 5-4 and 6-5 and then got the break they needed for the 7-5 win. The second set was more decisive as Texas, after splitting the first two games, went on a 5-0 run to finish the match. Ito and Sigsgaard will next have a rematch against 2 seed No.18 Matej Vocel and Dominik Kellovsky of Oklahoma State after falling to them earlier this fall at the ITA All-American. That match will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. PT/6:30 CT.
