Manzano immigrated to the United States from Mexico with his family at the age of four. He later attended Marble Falls High School, where he proceeded to win nine UIL 4A State Championships. His running prowess earned him a scholarship to compete at The University of Texas, where he broke the four-minute barrier as a freshman. Manzano won five NCAA titles (2005, 2008 Outdoor 1,500m; 2007-08 Indoor Mile; 2008 Indoor DMR) and was an 11-time All-American during his career as a Longhorn.
Manzano was an Olympian in 2008 and 2012. He earned a silver medal in the 1,500m in dramatic fashion at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, becoming the first American male since Jim Ryun in 1968 to medal in middle-distance. The Texas Ex and Longhorn Legend announced his retirement from competition over the summer, but is still actively involved in the Marble Falls and Austin communities.
The TTFCA Texas Track & Field Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Friday, Jan. 10, at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, Texas. For more information, visit www.ttfca.org/hall-of-famers
