The Longhorns moved to 12-1 for the season after their win over the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Austin, Texas – The No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis team adjusted to the addition of a home match against Incarnate Word and responded with a 7-0 sweep of the Cardinals on Tuesday at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns had originally been scheduled to play at Tulane in New Orleans, but that match was cancelled due to weather-related issues.
"I really want to thank Incarnate Word for coming over here and playing at the last minute," head coach Michael Center said. "I thought tonight our guys did a great job. They were out and they were hungry, they were active and they were energetic right away and played a terrific match. We're excited now to go play Georgia."
Texas finished the match without dropping a set in either singles or doubles. Junior No. 12 Yuya Ito started things off with his first win of the season playing first singles and a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gabriel Evans. Ito leads the Longhorns with 11 dual match singles wins and is 11-1 overall.
The match continued in order as senior No. 67 Leonardo Telles topped Sebastian Mortier, 6-0, 6-3 in second singles and moved to 6-1 on the season in dual match play. Senior No. 59 Harrison Scott clinched the team win for Texas with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Paco Bendana in third singles to move to 8-2, while senior Colin Markes stayed perfect at 7-0 with his 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Dennis Boisseau in fourth singles.
Freshman Chih Chi Huang also moved to 8-2 with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Caleb Dyer in fifth singles, while senior Rodrigo Banzer completed the sweep for Texas with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Oliver Valentinsson in sixth singles. Two additional non-counting singles matches were also played as senior Johnny Goodwin topped Nedim Ahmic, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Nevin Arimilli closed out Luke Godwin, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, the tandem of Markes and Telles moved up to first doubles and took a 6-1 victory over Evans and Mortier. No. 57 Ito and Huang then equaled that with a 6-1 win of their own against Bendana and Dyer to clinch the point. Both pairs are now 9-2 in dual match play this season. Arimilli and Goodwin picked up their third win as a pair in as many opportunities with a 7-6 (2) victory over Boisseau and Valentinsson. Scott and Banzer played in a non-counting fourth doubles match and shutout Godwin and Zachary Vander Heiden, 6-0.
The Longhorns will now travel to Athens, Ga., to face the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday, March 3 at 12 p.m. CT/1 p.m. ET.
