No. 6 Women’s Tennis sweeps No. 12 Northwestern at ITA National Indoors

Longhorns advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals to face No. 1 Stanford.

SEATTLE, Wash. — The No. 6 University of Texas women's tennis team registered a 4-0 sweep against No. 12 Northwestern (3-3) on Friday evening at the Seattle Tennis Club in the opening round of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Team Indoor Championships. With the victory, Texas (4-1) advances to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoors for the first time since 2006 and will face No. 1 Stanford (4-0) on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 p.m. Central (8:30 p.m. Pacific).
Due to the previous match still going on, the Texas-Northwestern match began with only No. 1-3 singles competing. Junior No. 101 Bojana Markovic got the Longhorns on the board first with a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot against Lee Or. Junior All-American Bianca Turati increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1 against No. 59 Clarissa Hand. Junior No. 49 Anna Turati followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 against No. 72 Julie Byrne.
All three of the remaining singles matches at No. 4-6 went to third sets. Sophomore Fernanda Labraña won her first set 7-5 against Caroline Pozo at No. 4 singles. Pozo answered with a 6-1 second-set win and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set. Labraña responded by winning four straight games to grab a 4-3 advantage, before Pozo tied the score at 4-4. Labraña then broke Pozo and held serve to close out the victory and give the Longhorns a 4-0 dual-match win.
Last year (Feb. 17, 2018), Texas defeated then-No. 6 Stanford by a 4-2 score in Austin. It marked UT's first victory against the Cardinal since 1995.
