Longhorns finish in the top five after starting day in ninth.
AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas women's swimming and diving team earned a fifth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
Meet Notes
- On the heels of Murphy Bromberg's national title on platform diving and a fourth place finish by the 400 free relay, Texas climbed into fifth place in the final team standings of the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday.
- It's the Longhorns third-straight top six finish and second time in three years that UT has finished fifth.
- Scoggin's divers tallied 61 diving points on the meet, trailing only UCLA (71) in the 2019 championship.
- Carol Capitani has now led Texas to six top 10 finishes and seven Big 12 Championships in her seven years as head coach.
- After starting the day in ninth-place, Bromberg's 20 points in diving and the Longhorns 30 points in the night's final event, the 400-free relay vaulted Texas into fifth place.
- Bromberg was UT head diving coach Matt Scoggin's 10th NCAA women's diving champion. She is also the 72nd individual champion at the NCAA Championships in school history.
- Claire Adams was a member of three All-American-winning relay teams and earned four honorable mention All-American honors at this year's championships. The junior is now an 11-time All-American and eight-time honorable mention All-American.
- The fifth-place finish by UT is best result when the Longhorns have hosted the NCAA Championships since 1995 when Texas recorded a third-place finish.
Head Diving Coach Matt Scoggin on the Texas diving performance: "Murphy (Bromberg) shook off a couple tough events Thursday and Friday and there wasn't going to be anyone that could catch her today. She made a decision and dived exactly as she planned. Paola (Pineda) gained some excellent experience as a freshman and will use this to work very hard this summer. Sofia (Rauzi), stepped up to make her first consolation final and scored some crucial game-changing team points. Alison Gibson matures competitively everyday and was in the position for both wins on both boards - her future remains bright. Meghan O'Brien won her very first consolation final and is one of the most improved divers I have ever worked with. I could not be more proud of how hard the divers worked for this!"
