Duo led Longhorns to season-opening victory over No. 16 Alabama
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas standouts Jillian Cox and Eva Okaro collected Southeastern Conference weekly distinction, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cox was tabbed SEC Swimmer of the Week, while Okaro was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
A sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, Cox logged a pair of individual wins during the season-opening victory over No. 16 Alabama. She recorded the second-fastest times in the country in both the 500 free at 4:35.74 and the 1000 free at 9:29.01. Cox also swam the third leg of the 400 free relay that posted a time of 3:23.07 (51.41). This marks her second career weekly accolade, as Cox earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors last year.
Okoro — a native of Derby, Del. — earned four podium finishes against the 16th-ranked Tide. The freshman touched the wall first in the 50 free (21.87) and the 100 free (47.48), with both times currently the third fastest times nationally. Okoro also swam the third leg of the winning 400 free relay (3:11.97/47.39) and anchored the second-place 200 medley relay (1:34.94/20.94) to help both squads register the second fastest times in the country.
Up next, the Longhorns return to action on Oct. 24, when Texas hosts Tennessee at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Prelims are set for 10 a.m., with finals to follow at 5:30 p.m.
