IRVING, Texas — University of Texas sophomore guard Jase Febres has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This marks Febres' first career weekly league honor.
Febres averaged 24.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 39.0 minutes per game in UT's pair of contests last week against Baylor and Iowa State. He converted 65.4-percent (17-26) from the floor, including a 62.5-percent mark (15-24) from three-point range, during the two games.
In Wednesday's overtime game at Baylor (Feb. 27), Febres posted 23 points while hitting 8-of-15 field goals, including 7-of-14 from three-point range. He also tied a career high with 3 assists and set a career high with 43 minutes played.
Febres followed that performance by setting new career highs in points (26), field goals made (9-11) and three-point field goals made (8-10) in 35 minutes during the 86-69 home win against Iowa State on Saturday (March 2). The 8 three-pointers made were the most by a UT player since A.J. Abrams converted 8-of-15 threes vs. Minnesota on March 19, 2009 (NCAA Tournament Round of 64).
On the season, Febres ranks fifth on the team in scoring (9.1 ppg) while hitting 39.2-percent (73-186) from three-point range in 25.5 mpg. Texas (16-13, 8-8 Big 12) returns to action tonight at No. 11/11 Texas Tech (24-5, 12-4 Big 12). Tip is set for 8 p.m. Central at United Supermarkets Arena, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
