No. 6 Women’s Tennis wins outright Big 12 regular-season title

The Longhorns conclude regular season with 6-1 win at WVU; Texas earns back-to-back regular-season league titles for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The No. 6 University of Texas women's tennis team recorded a 6-1 win at West Virginia (10-11, 0-9 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon indoors at the Summit Tennis Academy. With the victory, the Longhorns earned back-to-back outright Big 12 Conference regular-season championships for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Texas (16-3, 9-0 Big 12), who also posted a perfect 9-0 mark in league play in 2018, has now won 20 consecutive Big 12 Conference regular-season matches. UT's last loss in Big 12 regular-season action came in a 4-2 defeat at Baylor on April 12, 2017.
Texas grabbed an early 1-0 advantage by winning the doubles point. Junior Petra Granic and freshman Tijana Spasojevic registered a 6-4 victory against Sofia Duran and Anastasia Bovolskaia at second doubles. Granic and Spasojevic jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held a 5-2 cushion, before Duran and Bovolskaia won consecutive games to trim the deficit to 5-4. Granic and Spasojevic then claimed the ensuing game to close out the match.
The No. 55-ranked pair of junior twin sisters Anna Turati and Bianca Turati clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Christina Jordan and Paula Goetz at first doubles. After dropping the first game, the Turati's won four-straight games to build a 4-1 cushion. Jordan and Goetz trimmed the margin to 4-2, but the Turati's claimed the next two games to close out the match. The Turati twins won their eighth consecutive doubles match and improved to 12-2 in dual-match doubles action this spring, including a 7-0 mark in Big 12 play.
UT's sophomore duo of Fernanda Labraña and Bojana Markovic held a 5-4 advantage against Abigail Rosiello and Anne-Sophie Courteau at third doubles when the point was clinched.
With only four courts available at the facility, lines 1-4 in singles were contested first. No. 29 Bianca Turati claimed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Christina Jordan at first singles, while No. 41 Anna Turati quickly followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Sofia Duran at second singles to give the Longhorns a 3-0 cushion. Anna Turati claimed her 15th consecutive singles victory and improved to 16-2 in dual-match singles action this spring, including a perfect 9-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Bovolskaia answered with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 win against No. 123 Markovic at fourth singles to get the Mountaineers on the board. No. 55 Granic clinched the dual-match victory by rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win against Goetz at third singles. After dropping the opening set and trailing 5-4 in the second frame, Granic won three straight games to win the second set by a 7-5 count. She then jumped out to a 3-0 lead to open the deciding third frame and cruised to a 6-2 set win. Granic improved to 12-1 in dual-match singles play this spring, including an 8-1 record in Big 12 play.
With the dual match decided, Labraña registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Courteau at fifth singles. Senior Katie Poluta closed out the action with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win against Giovanna Caputo at sixth singles. Poluta won her seventh-straight singles match and improved to 12-1 in dual-match singles action this spring, including a 6-0 mark in Big 12 play.
Texas begins postseason play at the Big 12 Championship on April 19-21 (Friday-Sunday) in Lawrence, Kan. The Longhorns, the No. 1 seed in the league tourney, will open play in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 19. The bracket and schedule for the Big 12 Championship will be announced later tonight.
