Five Longhorn men and Ashtin Zamzow will compete on Friday in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Track & Field team will see five Longhorn men and women's heptathlon favorite Ashtin Zamzow competing on the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Friday.
Four Longhorns earned spots in today's finals with their performances in the semifinal rounds on Wednesday night. Senior Alex Rogers took a third-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:43.09 while Sam Worley, who placed fifth at last year's championships in the 1500m and earned All-America honors, will compete in that event after finishing second in his heat and automatically qualifying on Wednesday.
Sprinters Micaiah Harris and freshman Jonathan Jones, both school record holders in the 200m (20.09) and 400m (45.53), respectively, will compete for an NCAA title in those events tonight as well. Harris broke a 32-year old Longhorn record with 20.21 clocking (old record: 20.28, Tony Jones, 1987) at the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento two weeks ago. He knocked that down by .12 seconds in finishing second in his semifinal heat and advancing to the finals on Wednesday. Jones' time on Wednesday was his second-best at Texas and the 10th-fastest 400m clocking in school history.
In the field events, O'Brien Wasome will compete in the second flight of the men's triple jump and comes into the championships as the fifth seed, jumping for 16.11m/52-10.25 at the West Prelims. Wasome became the sixth-best performer in program history earlier this season after picking up a third-place finish at the Big 12 Championships (16.40/53-9.75). Senior Ashtin Zamzow, the school record holder in the heptathlon with 6,148 points, will begin the two-day heptathlon starting this afternoon and holds the top mark in the NCAA this year. Her record-setting performance came at the Texas Relays as she became the No. 7 U.S. collegiate performer and first Longhorn in program history to win the event at the Texas Relays. She is a member of The Bowerman Award Pre-NCAA Championships Watch List for the women, an honor that goes to the nation's premier collegiate track & field athlete.
Yesterday, senior sprinter Teahna Daniels, who holds the school record in the 200m and is the third-fastest performer in UT history in the 100m, qualified in the 100m, (11.05), 200m (22.65) and was a member of the 4x100 relay that sprinted to a blistering 42.84 clocking. That time matched the second-best in program history and was the quickest Longhorn 4x100m relay in 14 years. It was just .08 seconds shy of the 22-year old UT record of 42.76 set in 1998. Daniels, who along with Zamzow is listed on the 10-women Bowerman Award Pre-NCAA Championships Watch List, was joined by Kennedy Simon, Zola Golden and Kynnedy Flannel to place second in their heat and earn the automatic bid to the finals.
On Thursday night, Flannel joined Daniels in the 200m, finishing one spot behind her in their heat and with a time of 23.00 but did not advance to Saturday. 3000m steeplechase school record holder Anna McDonald finished the event with a time of 10:22.87 (19th) while Zola Golden (55.74 -24th) and Serenity Douglas (53.25 – 14th) competed in the 400m on Thursday. To close out the night, Sophia Falco picked up a 19th finish with a leap of 19-9 in the long jump and the 4x400m relay team of Douglas, Kennedy Simon, Flannel and Mariam Abdul-Rashid picked up a 13th overall finish with a time of 3:35.38 but did not advance to the finals.
