Diving's Alison Gibson advances to 3m synchro final at World Championships

Gibson and her partner, Krysta Palmer, make up ground in final rounds to place fifth in semifinals.
GWANGJU, South Korea - Rising University of Texas senior diver Alison Gibson teamed with Krysta Palmer to storm back in the final two rounds and secure a spot in the 3m synchro finals with a fifth-place finish (274.44 points) on Monday at the FINA World Championships.
The American pair found themselves in 16th place after three dives, but came back with a forward 3.5 somersault pike (72.54 points) in the fourth round to climb into seventh place. Gibson and Palmer then finished off their list with a back 2.5 somersault pike (63.90 points) on their final dive of the semifinals to complete their comeback and move on to the finals.
The duo edged out the Malaysian squad who had controlled the number five spot heading into the last dive by just 4.44 points.
Gibson and Palmer will be back at the well at 1:30 a.m. CT on Monday for the 3m synchro finals.
