QUERETARO, Mexico – With the 2018-19 season in the rearview, six members of the Texas track and field program continued to find success internationally, as they each earned medals at the NACAC Championships in Mexico over the weekend. Former Longhorn sprinter Teahna Daniels highlighted the group by winning a gold medal in the U23 100-meter dash with an 11.03 (3.3) performance in the final. Daniels' impressive showing comes on the heels of earning three All-America honors at last month's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
She received first-team accolades in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to bring her career total to 10 All-America honors. Daniels is the seventh American to win the gold medal in the 100 meters at the NACAC Championships and the first to do so since 2014.
Alex Rogers was the second Texas star to collect a gold medal at the NACAC Championships, as he and fellow Longhorn John Rice finished 1-2 in the U23 3000m steeplechase to claim two of the three podium spots. Rogers finished the race in 9:10.55, while Rice posted a 9:16.29 to finish more than two seconds ahead of third place.
The Longhorns' gold-silver sweep marked the first time that an American duo finished 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NACAC Championships since the inaugural meet in 2000. Rogers is the fourth American male to win a steeplechase gold in meet history.
Beyond Daniels, Rogers and Rice, a second trio of Texas athletes earned bronze medals with impressive outings in Central Mexico.
Canadian sprinter Mariam Abdul-Rashid was the first to do so, taking home third place in the Women's U23 100-meter hurdles with a 13.23 outing. Abdul-Rashid was a four-time All-American during her Longhorn career and collected second-team honors in the 4x400 at last month's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Micaiah Harris was the next to medal for UT, as the sprinter darted to a third-place finish in the Men's U23 200m final. Harris' bronze medal follows his first All-America honor as a Longhorn, as the Virginia Beach, Virginia, native was a first-team finisher in the men's 200m final last month.
Jamaican jumper O'Brien Wasome was the final Longhorn to reach the podium in Mexico. He launched himself 16.66 meters on his final attempt in the triple jump to earn the bronze medal. Wasome's attempt trailed only American's Armani Wallace (16.72m) and Isaiah Griffit (16.79m).
The Longhorn's accolade comes after earning first-team All-America honors in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin last month. There, Wasome soared to a UT career-best of 16.71m (54-10) to take fifth place on his home track.
