The Longhorn leaped more than eight meters to secure his berth in Saturday’s final.
DOHA, Qatar – Texas Track & Field's Steffin McCarter advanced to the men's long jump final at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships on Friday after launching himself 8.04m (-0.4 wind) into the pit on his second attempt during qualifying action. He finished third in his group, and fourth overall, to secure his spot in Saturday afternoon's long jump final.
McCarter, a Copperas Cove, Texas native, has now surpassed eight meters on two occasions this summer. He also did so on July 13 at the USA Track & Field Last Chance Qualifier in Chula Vista, California. Friday's effort marked his first eight-meter jump into a headwind.
Last season at Texas, McCarter finished 11th in the long jump at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships and finished 10th at the NCAA's outdoor counterpart to earn a pair of second-team All-America honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
McCarter is one of 17 members of the Texas Track & Field family competing in the IAAF World Championships this week. Saturday action in Qatar is scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. CT, with the men's long jump final slated to commence at 12:40 p.m. CT.
Three other Longhorns will also be in action on Saturday, including the 'Fastest Woman in America,' Teahna Daniels, along with Texas Exes Morolake Akinosun (2013-16) and Marielle Hall (2010-14). Daniels and Akinosun will compete in the women's 100-meter dash beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT, while Hall will compete in the women's 10,000 meters, which begins at 1:10 p.m. CT.
