Daniels’ run marked the best finish by a Longhorn in the event since 2013.
DOHA, Qatar – Texas Track & Field alumnae Teahna Daniels (2015-19) wrapped up an incredible 2019 season on Sunday with a seventh-place finish in the women's 100-meter final at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships. Daniels was the first Longhorn to qualify for the 100-meter final since Alexandria Anderson, who also finished seventh, in 2013.
The Orlando, Florida native opened her second day of sprints action with an 11.10 (+0.8) mark in the first 100-meter semifinal. The mark, which was Daniels' best legal effort since an 11.00 in the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, placed third in her heat and left her waiting to see if she would advance to the final on time. After Dafne Schippers (Netherlands) posted an 11.07 in the third semifinal, Daniels squeezed into the final by edging out Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji by five one-thousandths of a second (.005).
"I can't even explain how I feel right now," Daniels told NBC after learning she had advanced to the final. "I've always dreamed a being a finalist in the World Championships, so for it to happen right now is amazing and I'm ready to go. Flo knows!"
The women's 100-meter final marked the end of a 76-race campaign for the Longhorn, the most of any woman competing in Sunday's premier event.
Earlier in the competition, Daniels' fellow American, Morolake Akinosun, ran an 11.17 in the second 100-meter semifinal. It was a season-best mark for the Longhorn Legend, but placed fourth in her heat and left her just outside the cut line for the final.
