The Longhorns became only the sixth program to reach the 1,100-win milestone.
Nearly four years to the day since collecting the 1,000th victory in the program history with a win against Kansas, Texas Women's Basketball reached win number 1,100 by defeating the Jayhawks, 85-77, at the Frank Erwin Center on Wednesday night.
The Longhorns are the sixth team in NCAA women's history to achieve 1,100 all-time victories, joining Tennessee, UConn, James Madison, Louisiana Tech and Stanford.
Head coach Karen Aston was at the helm for the 1,000th victory and reflected on what it means to be a part of the Longhorn tradition.
"It's a privilege to be up here and represent The University of Texas and for us to get out 1,100 win today and be a part of the history of Texas Women's Basketball is really special to me and our players as well," Aston said. "It's a big deal. It's a big deal to be a part of a storied program and be a part of the type of tradition that has been established here. I'm proud that we got the win tonight, but ultimately I'm really proud and humbled to be a part of it."
Overall, Aston has had a hand in 350 UT triumphs, notching 177 as the Longhorns' head coach after previously collecting an additional 173 while serving as an assistant coach and associate head coach under Longhorn Legend Jody Conradt.
During her time on Conradt's staff, Aston also took part in the 700th and 800th victories in program history.
Being a piece of the tradition and heritage of Longhorn basketball is a driving force for the coaches and players, a feeling asserted by senior guard Sug Sutton.
"You take pride in playing for this program, I'm grateful to be a part of this program," Sutton said. "We have a lot of great alumni, a lot of great people supporting us and 1,100 wins, that's a lot. It means a lot to us and it means a lot to coach as well. I'm really proud to be a part of it."
While establishing herself in her second season on the Forty Acres, sophomore center Charli Collier is already well versed on what it means to be a Longhorn and echoed Sutton's sentiment.
"I'm blessed to be here and be a part of such a great tradition," Collier said. "Knowing the amount of works it takes to reach 1,100 wins, no one does that. It's amazing – just have to add onto that."
In all, Texas has defeated Kansas 29 times overall and in 15 straight matchups. The Longhorns begin a two-game Oklahoma road swing on Saturday, playing Oklahoma State in Stillwater before facing Oklahoma in Norman on Tuesday. UT will be back home in the Frank Erwin Center on Friday, January 31 for a marquee matchup against defending national champion Baylor.
