Women's Tennis' Stearns earns another win at ITF Tyler 80k tourney

Freshman claims three-set victory against WTA No. 173 Veronica Cepede Royg in Thursday’s singles qualifying round.
TYLER, Texas — University of Texas freshman Peyton Stearns continued her impressive play at the ITF (International Tennis Federation) 80k pro circuit event with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) win against Veronica Cepede Royg (Paraguay) in the singles qualifying second round on Thursday morning at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club.
Cepede Royg is currently No. 173 in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world singles rankings. This marks the highest-ranked WTA opponent Stearns has defeated in her career. She previously earned a three-set victory against WTA No. 210 Chihiro Muramatsu (Japan) on Monday in the first round of qualifying. Stearns is No. 496 in the latest WTA rankings.
Due to weather issues that forced the cancelation of matches on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday in Tyler, Stearns returned to the courts a few hours after her win against Cepede Royg and faced WTA No. 114 Greet Minnen (Belgium) in the singles main draw Round of 32. Minnen recorded a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Stearns on Thursday afternoon.
Fellow UT freshman Charlotte Chavatipon (WTA No. 838) also competed in the singles qualifying draw at the ITF Tyler 80k event. Chavatipon's match against WTA No. 270 Conny Perrin (Switzerland) began on Monday but was suspended due to weather. When play resumed on Tuesday, Perrin claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory.
