SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — University of Texas junior Charli Collier is one of 20 watch list candidates for the 2021 Lisa Leslie Award, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Friday. Now in its fourth year, the award recognizes the top center in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates. The award is named after three-time All-American, 1994 National Player of the Year and Class of 2015 Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie.
Collier is a unanimous selection to the 10-person Preseason All-Big 12 Team. A first-team All-Big 12 selection as a sophomore in 2019-20, she also was a top-10 finalist for last year's Lisa Leslie Award.
Collier led the squad in rebounding (10.5 rpg) and blocked shots (39) and tied for the team lead in scoring (13.1 ppg) in 29.8 minutes per contest while starting all 30 games. She registered 16 double-doubles during her sophomore year, becoming one of just four players in UT program history to average a points-rebounds double-double over an entire season. Collier reached double figures in scoring 23 times and in rebounds 17 times, reaching the 15-rebound mark on seven occasions on the year.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds of the selection process. Starting Five Fan Voting will go live on Friday, Nov. 13 at this web site: www.hoophallawards.com. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Leslie and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Lisa Leslie Center Award will be presented April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award and the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
Texas opens the regular season at home against SMU on Wednesday, Nov. 25.
