Kai Jones scored all 13 of his points in the second half, and Courtney Ramey scored the game-winning basket with 20 seconds left to lead the Longhorns.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Junior guard Courtney Ramey converted a driving reverse layup with 20 seconds remaining to lead No. 19/22 Texas (2-0) to a 78-76 win against Davidson (1-1) in the quarterfinals of the Camping World Maui Invitational Monday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center-Asheville. With the victory, the Longhorns advance to play Indiana (2-0) in Tuesday's semifinal round at 12:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Ramey paced six Longhorns in double-figure scoring with a team-high 14 points. Junior guard Andrew Jones added 13 points (5-10 FG), and sophomore forward Kai Jones scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Senior forward Jericho Sims (12), freshman forward Greg Brown (11) and senior guard Matt Coleman III (10) also reached double figures, and Coleman added a game-high nine assists.
The Wildcats led by as much as seven points (23-16) in the first half. The Longhorns used a 13-2 run a four-minute span to grab a 29-25 advantage after a Ramey three-pointer with 6:49 left. A pair of Ramey free throws in the final seconds of the half gave Texas a 43-39 cushion at the break.
Davidson tied the score at 55-55 on a Kellan Grady jumper at the 12:45 mark of the second half. The Longhorns answered and built a seven-point lead (68-61) following a Kai Jones three-pointer with 7:32 remaining. After a Greg Brown dunk gave Texas a 72-65 advantage at the 5:06 mark, the Wildcats responded and tied the game at 76-76 on a Luka Brajkovic hook shot with 1:02 left.
That set the stage for Ramey's driving reverse layup with 20 seconds remaining on UT's next possession. Davidson had two opportunities to score in the in the final six seconds, but Sam Mennenga missed on a pair of three-point attempts.
