12.01.2020 | Men's Basketball
The Longhorns hold the Hoosiers to 23.9-percent field goal shooting while advancing to Wednesday’s championship game of the Camping World Maui Invitational.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Defense was the story of the day, as No. 17/22 Texas (3-0) held Indiana (2-1) to 23.9-percent field goal shooting en route to a 66-44 victory in the semifinals of the Camping World Maui Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center-Asheville. With the victory, the Longhorns advance to play No. 14/16 North Carolina (3-0) in Wednesday's championship game at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Senior guard Matt Coleman III paced the offensive attack with a team-high 16 points (6-11 FG), and junior guard Courtney Ramey added 13 points (6-6 FT). Junior guard Andrew Jones also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points. Sophomore forward Brock Cunningham tied his career high with 11 rebounds and added career highs with four assists and three steals to go along with six points in 31 minutes.
Texas scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the contest. Leading 13-11 after Indiana's Armaan Franklin hit a driving layup at the 8:40 mark, the Longhorns used a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to build a 23-11 lead following a Coleman three-pointer with 5:23 left. The margin did not dip below double digits for the remainder of the half, as UT limited the Hoosiers to 21.7-percent (5-23) field goal shooting in the opening 20 minutes and took a 31-19 advantage into the break.
Indiana scored the first two points of the second half on a pair of Rob Phinisee free throws to trim the lead to 31-21, but that was as close as the Hoosiers would get the rest of the way. Holding a 46-31 advantage at the 11:15 mark, the Longhorns went on a 10-1 run over the next five minutes to increase its cushion to 56-32 with 6:49 remaining after an Andrew Jones layup. The lead did not fall below 19 points the rest of the way.
