AUSTIN, Texas – Defending Big 12 champions and national runners-up Texas Rowing will compete in a scrimmage against the Chinese National Team on home waters this Saturday in Waco, Texas ahead of the spring racing season. Races will get underway at 9 a.m.
The one-day event will provide the Longhorns with an opportunity to measure themselves against a squad that has been training throughout Central Texas during the winter months. Members of the Chinese men's and women's rowing team spent parts of November and December training in Lady Bird Lake and has more recently been training in Waco in preparations for qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Texas' squad features several key returning members, including junior Milica Slijepcevic, the 2019 Big 12 Rower of the Year and Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association First-Team All-America, three-time All-American junior Ljiljana Josic, and 2019 Second-Team All-American sophomore Francesca Raggi.
This season, the Longhorns will host a pair of events at the Walter E. Long Lake, starting with the 20th Annual Longhorn Invitation will be held on Saturday, April 25. On Sunday, May 17, the Longhorns will host the 12th Big 12 Championship regatta, as teams compete for the automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 29-31 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The season will begin on the West Coast with the historic San Diego Crew Classic on April 4-5.
