UT boasts a pair of singles All-Americans for the first time since the 1995 season.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas Women's Tennis seniors Anna Turati and Bianca Turati both earned recognition as 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Singles All-Americans, the organization announced Tuesday. This marks the first time since the 1995 season that the Longhorns had at least two players claim ITA singles All-America honors in the same year.
The ITA awarded All-America status based on the unpublished, double run of the Oracle ITA Singles and Doubles rankings. A total of 20 singles players and 10 doubles teams received the honor.
Anna Turati, who earned her first career All-America honor, concluded the shortened season at No. 4 in the final Oracle/ITA national singles rankings (March 3). Turati registered a 22-4 overall singles during the 2019-20 season and earned Big 12 Conference Player of the Week accolades on Jan. 14. She posted an 11-1 mark at the No. 2 singles line for the Longhorns in dual-match play in the spring, including three wins against ranked opponents.
In the fall, Anna Turati recorded an 11-3 singles mark against collegiate competition. She advanced to the quarterfinals at the Oracle ITA Masters, the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships and the championship match at the ITA National Fall Championships. Nine of her 11 wins in the fall came against ITA nationally-ranked opponents, including three Top-10 wins over No. 2 Estela Perez-Somarriba (Miami), No. 5 Kelly Chen (Duke) and No. 7 Sara Daavettila (North Carolina).
Bianca Turati earned her second career ITA singles All-America honor, as she also claimed the accolade in her sophomore season in 2018. Turati, who concluded the shortened season at No. 14 in the final Oracle/ITA national singles rankings (March 3), registered an 11-1 mark at the No. 1 singles spot in the spring and twice earned Big 12 Conference Player of the Week accolades (Feb. 4, Feb. 11). She posted two wins against Top-10 nationally-ranked opponents and five victories against Top-60 opponents.
In the summer and fall, Bianca Turati competed solely in professional tournaments. She won a pair of ITF 25k singles titles, earning her first championship in Tarvisio, Italy in the summer on clay courts. Turati concluded her fall season with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win against WTA No. 438 Katie Volynets (USA) to win the singles crown on hard courts in Malibu, Calif. She also won the 15k singles title at the H-E-B Women's Pro Tennis Open (Oct. 27) in Austin with a three-set victory against Anna Turati in the final, and she paired with Anna to claim the doubles title at the same event.
Texas completed the shortened 2020 dual-match season with an 11-3 record and held the No. 4 spot in the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Division I team national rankings (March 10).
