Current and former members of The University of Texas Silver Spurs have announced their commitment to match up to $150,000 in donations to support the Neighborhood Longhorns Program.
AUSTIN, Texas – As many around the country are looking for ways to support elementary and secondary education in these uncertain times, The University of Texas Silver Spurs, the organization entrusted to care for BEVO XV, have announced their commitment to match up to $150,000 in donations to support The University of Texas' Neighborhood Longhorns Program.
Launched in 1991 as the official community service arm of Texas Athletics, the Neighborhood Longhorns Program is the premier educational outreach program for The University of Texas at Austin. The program offers economically disadvantaged 2nd through 8th graders the opportunity to envision attending college through incentives and scholarships. This is achieved through the involvement of UT students, volunteers and staff who provide tutoring and mentoring in participating schools.
"The Silver Spurs are committed to making BEVO the most charitable mascot in the country," said Ricky Brennes, Executive Director of BEVO/Silver Spurs Alumni Association. "Supporting the University's outreach to promote the importance of education to future generations is core to our organization's charitable endeavors."
All donations to Neighborhood Longhorns through August 31, 2020, will be matched up to $150,000. Click here to donate to the Neighborhood Longhorns Program.
"Now more than ever, Longhorn Nation must come together to support our local communities," said Rebecca Haden, UT Associate Athletics Director of External Affairs. "I am grateful to our Longhorns spirit groups for stepping up to this challenge."
As of Fall 2019, the Neighborhood Longhorns program has provided more than $733,000 in scholarships and rewarded the academic performance of more than 95,000 students. The overarching goal of NLP is to support students in their attainment of a high school degree and ultimately matriculation to college.
"There is no greater gift than helping a child see their unlimited potential," said Reid Balser President of the Silver Spurs Student Organization. "Each year, we are blessed to work with the dedicated teachers in the schools participating in the Neighborhood Longhorns Program to help their students with this journey."
