The Longhorns used a 19-0 run in the second quarter to improve to 10-1 at home this season.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Women's Basketball team found continued success at home on Saturday night, as the Longhorns bested Texas Tech, 72-53, inside the Frank Erwin Center. The win marked the seventh-straight home win for Texas (12-4; 6-3 Big 12) and pushed UT's home record to 10-1 this season.
The Longhorns busted the game open in the second quarter with a 19-0 run that was anchored by a trio of 3-pointers from Kyra Lambert. Texas was 0-for-8 from behind the arc before Lambert drilled three in a row to spark the run. Lambert finished with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. On the defensive end, UT held the Lady Raiders scoreless for more than five minutes of game time to open up a 40-20 lead during the run.
With swarming pressure as its defensive anchor, Texas forced 19 turnovers (14 in first half) and scored 23 points off of those turnovers. The Longhorns also held two-time All-American Vivian Gray scoreless for the first 19 minutes of the game. Gray entered the night averaging 19.3 points per game (No. 5 in Big 12) and finished with just 12 points.
Leading the way for Texas offensively was All-America candidate Charli Collier, who finished with 30 points and 19 rebounds. Collier also added one block and tied her career high (10th occurrence) with two steals. Saturday marked Collier's sixth consecutive double-double and 12th of the season – the most of any Division I player. Over her last four games, Collier has grabbed 75 rebounds – an average of 18.8 per game. Saturday was also Collier's best scoring output against a Big 12 opponent in her career, and her second career 30-point game.
Texas got solid production from Celeste Taylor and Joanne Allen-Taylor as well. The former scored in double figures for the 23rd time in her career, finishing with 10 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals. It was the eighth time this season Allen-Taylor has recorded at least three assists.
After opening up a 20-point lead in the first half, Texas held control throughout the rest of the contest. UT outscored the Lady Raiders in each of the first three quarters (18-15; 25-8; 16-14) and then closed out its 11th double-digit win of the season in the final frame.
The Longhorns are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, with a road trip to face Oklahoma (5-7; 2-5 Big 12). Tip-off at the Lloyd Noble Center is set for 7 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
