No. 4/4 Men’s Basketball tops Iowa State, 78-72

Andrew Jones records a career-high 23 points, as the Longhorns improve to 3-0 in Big 12 play.
AUSTIN, Texas — Junior guard Andrew Jones registered a career-high 23 points to lead No. 4/4 Texas (9-1, 3-0 Big 12) to a 78-72 victory against Iowa State (2-6, 0-4 Big 12) on Tuesday evening at the Frank Erwin Center. Jones converted a career-best 10-of-20 field goals and added six rebounds and four assists in a season-high 37 minutes.
Freshman forward Greg Brown posted 15 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 threes) and eight rebounds, while senior guard Matt Coleman III tallied 13 points, five boards and four assists. Senior forward Jericho Sims recorded 10 points (4-5 FG) and eight rebounds, and junior guard Courtney Ramey added 10 points. Sophomore forward Kai Jones pulled down a career-high nine rebounds.
Iowa State scored the first six points of the contest and held a 16-10 advantage following a pair of Rasir Bolton free throws at the 13:35 mark. The Longhorns responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a 20-16 lead after a Sims three-point play with 9:35 remaining. Leading 28-25 at the 4:18 mark, Texas closed the half with a 9-2 spurt to take a 37-28 cushion into the break.
The Longhorns scored the opening five points of the second frame to build its largest lead of the contest at 15 points (42-27) with 18:45 remaining after a Ramey three-pointer. The margin remained in double digits for the majority of the second half, until a Tyler Harris three-pointer pulled the Cyclones within 70-61 at the 4:07 mark.
After a Javan Johnson layup trimmed the margin to 73-67 with 1:12 left, Coleman III answered by knocking down a jumper with 43 seconds remaining to give Texas a 75-67 cushion. The Cyclones cut the deficit to four points (76-72) with 10 seconds left, but Ramey hit a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the win.
Texas returns to action when it travels to face No. 14/16 West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 9. Tip is set for 12 p.m. CT (1 p.m. ET) at the WVU Coliseum, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
