Men’s Basketball’s Carr and Jones on Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy preseason watch list

Senior guards are two of 50 preseason candidates for the prestigious national award.
ATLANTA — University of Texas senior guards Marcus Carr and Andrew Jones are two of 50 preseason watch list candidates for the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Monday. Chosen by a group of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the prestigious national award.
Carr was previously tabbed the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year and named to the six-person Preseason All-Big 12 Team. In addition, he was one of 20 players selected to the watch list for the 2022 Bob Cousy Award, honoring the nation's top point guard, and one of 20 players named to the preseason watch list for the NABC Division I Player of the Year award.
Carr played in 92 career games (87 starts) during his previous two years on the court at Minnesota and one season at Pittsburgh and registered collegiate totals of 1,361 points (14.8 ppg), 477 assists (5.2 apg) and 370 rebounds (4.0 rpg). Carr earned All-Big Ten First Team (Associated Press) recognition last season at Minnesota, where he ranked first in the Big Ten in minutes played (35.8 mpg), third in scoring (19.4 ppg) and assists (4.9 apg) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1).
Jones was previously named Preseason Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and was one of 20 players selected to the watch list for the 2022 Jerry West Award, honoring the nation's top shooting guard. He has played in 102 career games (68 starts) and ranks No. 23 on UT's all-time scoring list (1,251 points) entering the season. Jones has reached double figures in scoring 65 times in his career and topped the 20-point mark 11 times. An All-Big 12 Second Team selection last year, he led the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) and ranked third in assists (2.3 apg) and minutes (31.5 mpg) and fourth in rebounding (4.5 rpg).
No. 5/5 Texas tips off the 2021-22 season with a home contest against Houston Baptist on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. Central at the Erwin Center, and the game will be televised nationally by Longhorn Network.
