The Longhorns earned their 10th Big 12 win of the season on Wednesday night.
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Texas Women's Basketball team completed its season sweep of Kansas with a 61-52 victory at Allen Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The win improved Texas to 16-6 overall and 10-5 in Big 12 play this season. The Longhorns have now won at least 10 Big 12 games in each of the last six seasons.
"I couldn't be more proud of my team," head coach Vic Schaefer said. "I thought Charli (Collier), Audrey (Warren) and Ashley (Chevalier) were all really consistent all night long. I thought Kyra (Lambert) ran our team and did a nice job at the point, and did a really good job there. I felt like all night long, those kids were really solid and did a nice job offensively, as well as defensively. I felt like we were really locked - I loved how we started the game and I loved how we came out in the third quarter."
The Longhorns held Kansas to just five points (2-12 FG; 16.7%) in the first quarter, the second-fewest points UT has allowed in a quarter this season. Only a four-point second quarter in a Feb. 10 win over Oklahoma State marked a better 10-minute showing by Texas defensively this season. Overall, it was the 10th time this season that the Longhorns have held their opponent to less than 10 points in a quarter (sixth vs. Big 12 opponent). The strong effort on the defensive end, and six different Horns getting into the scoring column, helped UT open a 17-5 lead after the opening frame.
Freshman guard Ashley Chevalier was as gritty as any Longhorn on the defensive end Wednesday night. Coming off the bench, Chevalier drew three charges in the second quarter alone to help Texas hold Kansas to just 20 points in 20 minutes of basketball. Chevalier finished the night with seven points, a career-high seven rebounds and four assists. She has recorded seven assists and zero turnovers over her last two games.
Texas struggled from behind the arc in the first half, going 0-for-7 from 3-point land, but turned it around by making 3-of-6 attempts in the third quarter. Kyra Lambert (8 points, 4 assists) made the first two, with Audrey Warren draining the third to open up a 20-point Longhorn lead. Warren was a stat-stuffer for UT on Wednesday, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, four assists three steals and only one turnover. It was the first collegiate double-double for Warren. Over her last two games, she has grabbed 10 rebounds vs. Kansas State and 10 against the Jayhawks – the two best single-game rebounding totals of her career to date.
Rounding out a strong showing for the Longhorns was All-America candidate Charli Collier. She scored 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and tied her career high with two steals (11th occurrence). It marked the 16th double-double for Collier this season (31st of career) and the 15th time she has scored at least 20 points in a game this year (20th of career). Collier's 16 double-doubles are the second-most of any Division I player during the current campaign.
The Longhorns return home for a two-game swing at the Frank Erwin Center beginning on Saturday, Feb. 27, against Oklahoma. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. CT on Longhorn Network.
