No. 1 Men’s Swimming sweeps six events on final day of Big 12 Championship

AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 1 University of Texas Men's Swimming team swept six events during Saturday's fourth day of the Big 12 Championship at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Longhorns won all 18 events over the four-day meet.
After the fourth and final day of Swimming, Texas holds the lead with 951 points and is followed in the team standings by TCU (681) and West Virginia (661). The team champions for the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship will not be crowned until the completion of the upcoming Diving championship.
Senior Alvin Jiang was named the Men's Swimmer of the Meet, while Eddie Reese was tabbed the Men's Coach of the Meet. Over the four days of racing, the Longhorns set six Big 12 Championship meet records.
Junior Daniel Krueger won the title in the 100-yard freestyle in a Big 12 Championship meet record time of 41.33, the fastest-time in the nation this season. He eclipsed his own meet record of 41.46 set last year.
Jiang won his third individual title of the meet with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly (1:41.60). Freshman Carson Foster captured his third individual title of the meet with a win in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:40.34, the fifth-fastest time in the country this year.
Freshman David Johnston Jr. earned the win in the 1,650-yard freestyle (14:52.28), and sophomore Caspar Corbeau claimed the title in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:52.52, the third-fastest time in the nation this year. The quartet of Krueger, senior Jake Sannem, senior Chris Staka and junior Drew Kibler closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:48.48, the second-fastest time in the country this season.
The Big 12 Diving Championship is scheduled for Monday, March 1 through Wednesday, March 3 at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Finals sessions are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT on all three days. All finals sessions of diving will be streamed live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. Due to health and safety protocols, the event is closed to the public.
Meet Highlights
- Texas went 1-2 in the 200-yard backstroke to open Saturday's finals. Freshman Carson Foster claimed his third individual title of the meet in a time of 1:40.34, the fifth-fastest time in the country this year. Senior Austin Katz placed second in a time of 1:40.83, tied for the ninth-fastest time in the nation this season.
- The Longhorns swept the top four spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Junior Daniel Krueger won the title in a Big 12 Championship meet record time of 41.33, the fastest-time in the nation this season. The performance eclipsed the previous meet record of 41.46 set by Krueger last year. Junior Drew Kibler took second (42.29) and was followed by senior Chris Staka in third (42.42) and senior Luke Bowman in fourth (43.03).
- Freshman David Johnston Jr. earned the win in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 14:48.09, and senior JohnThomas Larson placed second (14:52.28).
- Sophomore Caspar Corbeau claimed the title in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:52.52, the third-fastest time in the nation this year. Sophomore Jake Foster took third (1:55.13), and junior Charlie Scheinfeld placed fourth (1:56.02).
- Senior Alvin Jiang won his third individual title of the meet with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:41.60. Junior Andrew Koustik placed second (1:42.38), freshman Zac Van Zandt took fourth (1:43.73) and freshman Coby Carrozza finished fifth (1:44.04).
