The Longhorns knocked off Iowa State in overtime, 84-82, to advance on Friday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Texas Women's Basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Phillips 66 Bi 12 Championship on Friday behind an 84-82 overtime victory over Iowa State. The win pushed the Longhorns' record to 18-8 and was their third win over the Cyclones this season.
Kyra Lambert and Joanne Allen-Taylor led the way for Texas, with the backcourt duo combining for 43 points. Lambert stuffed the stat sheet, tallying a career-high 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals while committing no turnovers. Meanwhile, Allen-Taylor chipped in with 20 points, a career-high nine assists and two rebounds.
Both Longhorns had career days from behind the arch, with Lambert making a career-high six 3-pointers (T-No. 10 in school history), and Allen-Taylor adding four more treys. Overall, Texas made 13 shots from 3-point range – their best tally in a game this season, and tied for the second-most in a game in school history.
Texas used a stifling defensive effort in the second quarter to open up a 32-27 lead at halftime. The Longhorns allowed the Cyclones to score just eight points in the 10-minute frame, the 13th time this season that UT has held an opponent to less than 10 points in a quarter.
In the third quarter, Iowa State battled back to take a 42-41 lead in the third quarter. The Longhorns immediately responded though, going on a 10-0 run to pull back in front. The Cyclones continued to chip away, eventually scoring 24 fourth-quarter points – 12 of which came at the free throw line – to force overtime.
Ashley Chevalier, making just her second start of the season, was Texas' spark in the early goings of overtime. The freshman scored UT's first five points of the extra period, draining a 3-pointer followed by a mid-range jumper to help Texas get the early edge. Chevalier finished the game with a career-high 11 points on 5-of-9 from the floor to go along with five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Allen-Taylor, Chevalier and Lambert all played in excess of 40 minutes for the Longhorns on Friday morning, with Allen-Taylor and Lambert both going the distance and playing the full 45 minutes. Chevalier finished with a career-high 44 minutes played.
The Longhorns now move on to Saturday's semifinal round, where they will await the winner of this afternoon's Baylor/TCU matchup. Tip-off is currently scheduled for 12 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
